First Drive: Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

Our in-house test driver Sam of Seen Through Glass tries out the world’s fastest production SUV.

Alfa’s new uber-SUV uses the same 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 same as in the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which produces 503 bhp and 440 lb/ft of torque.

“It’s the sportiest SUV I’ve ever driven”

Unsurprisingly, the car gets to 60 mph in next to no time – 3.8 seconds – but that doesn’t make it the fastest accelerating SUV. Nor does the 176 mph top speed. It’s the 7m 51s laptime around the Nurburgring that gives the car the bragging rights that Alfa have graciously bestowed on it, and that is seriously quick. To put it in perspective, it’s quicker around the ‘Ring than a Ferrari 430, Lamborghini Gallardo and the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S.

It will be competing with the Mercedes GLC 63 AMG and Porsche Macan Turbo – so some pretty tough competition – and is set to be priced from £69,500in the UK, the same price as the Porsche and a touch cheaper than the Merc.
