Driven: 2018 Mercedes C63 S AMG Estate
The Mercedes C63 is one of the most enquired about vehicles on Magnitude Finance’s website – resident road tester Sam of Seen Through Glass takes the lastest version of Merc’s mighty V8, RWD estate for a spin.
AMG “wagons” have been around for a while. Believe it or not, the first AMG estate was the 1976 AMG 240 D – 280 TE (S 123), but the first “proper” AMG load-luggers didn’t appear until the mid 90s. The C36 became the first AMG powered C-class in 1995 with a wagon following in 1997 at a time when performance estates were something of an oddity. The popularity of rocket-powered family cars has grown dramatically since (thanks, Audi RS6), but the AMG-powered C-class estate remains pleasingly scarce.
With 510 bhp, the C63’s 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 is almost twice as powerful as the original 275 bhp C36. The latest version has two more cogs than the outgoing model with a new 9-speed box, and it also adopts the traction control system from the AMG GT R. Unlike Audi, Mercedes has stuck with RWD which gives the C63 S a character all of its own – watch the full video to find out what Same thought.
